Mercy Medical Center has received the Women’s Choice Award distinguishing it as one of the 2017 America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Patient Experience, the sixth consecutive year Mercy has been so honored. The award signifies that Mercy has been ranked within the top 100 hospitals of similar size based on number of beds.

The Women’s Choice Award identifies the country’s best healthcare institutions based on criteria including HCAHPS (Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems) database, which considers female patient satisfaction and research about women’s healthcare preferences.

“The Women’s Choice Award measures female patient satisfaction--what women say they want from a hospital. This includes quality communication with doctors, the responsiveness of nurses and support staff, cleanliness, referrals from other women, and more. It is the tradition of the Sisters of Mercy to best serve our patient’s health care needs, and this award reflects this tradition,” said Thomas R. Mullen, President and CEO of Mercy Health Services, Mercy Medical Center.

“Mercy has a national reputation for being at the forefront of women’s health care. It’s a reputation founded on the efforts of physicians, nurses, and medical staff in such fields as gynecology, oncology, breast cancer, plastic and reconstructive surgery, the latest in robotic surgical techniques and more,” said Dr. Neil B. Friedman, Medical Director of The Weinberg Center for Women’s Health and Medicine at Mercy.

“This hospital was awarded because it is one of the best at treating their patients the way their patients want to be treated,” said Delia Passi, founder and CEO of the Women’s Choice Award. “Hospital choice is a critical decision, particularly for women, who make more than 80% of health care decisions. Our designation makes it easier for them to choose a hospital where they and their families are more likely to have a better experience and outcome,” she said.

The Women’s Choice Award collects the data for the following HCAHPS survey measures and uses a weighted average to award the best hospitals for patient experience:

  • Effective communication with doctors and nurses
  • Responsiveness for requests for help
  • Pain management
  • Explanation about medications before being administered
  • Bathroom and room cleanliness
  • Patient recommendation rating

According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, good patient experience positively correlates to disease management, adherence to treatment plans and health outcomes.

“With the 2017 Women’s Choice Award, the sixth straight year we have been so honored, Mercy continues to garner honors for its achievements in women’s health,” Mr. Mullen said, citing Mercy’s recognition as a “Top Hospital” by U.S. News & World Report; Mercy’s Nurse Magnet designation, etc.
