There are common symptoms women should never ignore when it comes to gynecological health. Among them are painful periods, heavy periods and pain during sex, which could be signs of fibroids, which are noncancerous tumors, or endometriosis, where the lining of the uterus grows outside the organ.

According to Ann Peters, M.D., MS, is an experienced gynecologist and surgeon in The Gynecology Center at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, both can make it difficult to get pregnant or cause problems during pregnancy.

"Generally, what I tell women is that if it seems that it is more painful than it should be, you are missing days from work or school, you can't enjoy activities, then that could be a sign of an abnormal period that you should come and see me for," Peters said.

There are treatments available for fibroids and endometriosis.
