Pain in the upper abdominal area could indicate a gallbladder problem, usually associated with nausea and vomiting. It comes intermittently and can come after eating a meal high in fat, lasts a few hours and then subsides.

According to Nora C. Meenaghan, M.D., FACS, a skilled surgeon with The Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery at Mercy, the most common cause of gallbladder problems is gallstones.

“Visit your doctor. Other things can mimic gallstones: reflux and other GI problems. And then they would send you for a test if they thought it was appropriate,” Dr. Meenaghan said.

Most commonly, gallstones are diagnosed with ultrasound. The main treatment is surgery to remove the gallbladder.

Dr. Meenaghan has specialized training in minimally invasive surgical techniques including laparoscopic and robotic surgery. She focuses on surgical treatment for hernias, colon resections, gallbladder disease and acid reflux disease (GERD)
