Mercy Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Gregory Gasbarro Discusses Biceps and Triceps Injuries

The triceps and biceps are the arm's two main muscles. The bicep is located in the front upper arm. The triceps are located behind the upper arm between the shoulder and elbow.

According to Gregory V. Gasbarro, M.D., a Fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon at The Shoulder, Elbow, Wrist and Hand Center at Mercy, the tendons of the biceps and triceps can be torn from a fall, lifting heavy objects, overuse or repetitive motion.

"Any time a patient is having difficulty with their activities, daily living, any time they are having difficulty sleeping at night, I think it's important to come in and get these things checked. There may be something that can be treated very simply with non-operative treatment. And if that fails, or if it's indicated, I do surgery for all of these conditions," Dr. Gasbarro said.

Symptoms to look out for include sharp pain, burning, weakness, swelling, bruising and limited motion.
