Mercy's Dr. Robert Atlas, OB/GYN Discusses Pregnancy Acne
March 02, 2021
Being pregnant is hard enough, but then to deal with acne can make it even more uncomfortable. But acne is actually common during pregnancy.
In fact, more than half of pregnant women can expect to develop it. In some cases, it may be severe. The main cause of pregnancy acne is increased hormone levels in the first trimester.
That's according to Robert O. Atlas, M.D., FACOG, Chair of The Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Mercy Medical Center, who also says there are things you can do about it.
"The best thing you can do is more frequent washing of your face and keeping it clean and keeping your hands off of your face. What we recommend is you use some medications. Some we don't recommend like the retinoids. Those can be harmful to the fetal development," Dr. Atlas said.
Dr. Atlas says benzoyl peroxide and typical over the counter medications are safe to use.
