The Link Between Obesity and Gynecologic Health
March 29, 2022
The link between obesity and gynecologic health can have many implications on pregnancy and routine gynecological care.
This can include irregular periods, fertility issues and even impacting survival with certain cancers.
According to Ann Peters, M.D., MS, an experienced gynecologist and surgeon at The Institute for Gynecologic Care at Mercy, patients should expect their doctor to keep an eye on their weight.
"Whenever you come for a routine annual exam, we'll get a weight as well as a height, and then calculate a body-mass index, and that will have an impact on the different counseling that we will present to women at their exam," Dr. Peters said.
Genetic analysis suggests that more research is needed to understand the potentially causal associations between obesity, metabolic hormones and female reproductive disorders.
