Loyola University Maryland’s Sellinger School of Business and Management recognized David N. Maine, M.D., president and CEO of Mercy Health Services, as the 2024 Business Leader of the Year at ceremonies held Tuesday, Nov. 12th at the Renaissance Harborplace Hotel in Baltimore.

The award honors business executives who embody Loyola’s Jesuit commitment to community and service in the leadership of their organization.

“Dr. Maine brings a remarkable range of skills and talents, including his deep clinical expertise and personal commitment to helping patients as well as his service-oriented business leadership abilities,” said Mary Ann Scully, MBA ’79, dean of Loyola’s Sellinger School. “These abilities make him an exceptionally impactful leader in the city of Baltimore, giving direction to a key medical institution, caring for the health needs of the region, and conceiving transformative collaborations. Loyola is proud to name Dr. Maine the 2024 Business Leader of the Year.”

Dr. Maine leads Mercy Health Services, an independent, mission-driven health system serving the greater Baltimore area, and Mercy Medical Center, a general acute care teaching hospital founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1874. The hospital is partnering with Loyola to launch the University’s new Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.

Coinciding with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in January 2020, Dr. Maine became the first physician to lead the hospital in its 150-year history. Under his leadership, Mercy navigated the pandemic’s challenges, ensuring the continuity of essential services for the community with a commitment to safety and patient care.

Dr. Maine has led the health system’s growth and transformation by introducing new clinical programs and expanding Mercy’s network of primary and specialty care providers and locations throughout the Baltimore region. The health system has invested in its Centers of Excellence and enhanced its maternal health and preventive care programs.

Under Dr. Maine’s leadership, Mercy has earned national recognitions, including as one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals for Surgical Care by Healthgrades and a Top U.S. Workplace for Women by Newsweek.

Prior to his appointment, Dr. Maine served as executive vice president for Mercy Health Services, where he was responsible for operations, overseeing Mercy Medical Center, specialty and primary care physician networks, and Mercy affiliates. He also served as executive vice president of Mercy’s Physician Enterprise, focusing on the growth of its physician network.

His other roles at Mercy have included president of the medical staff and senior vice president of clinical transformation, leading Mercy’s efforts to expand ambulatory surgical services. Since 2007, Dr. Maine has also served as medical director of The Center for Interventional Pain Medicine at Mercy.

Dr. Maine is the chair of the Maryland Hospital Association’s Council on Clinical & Quality Issues and serves on the association’s board of trustees. He also serves on the board of the Greater Baltimore Committee. Recognized as a Grassroots Champion by the American Hospital Association, Dr. Maine was named a top Maryland health care leader by The Daily Record. He has perennially earned the distinction as a Baltimore magazine “Top Doctor.”

Dr. Maine attended the University of Rochester School of Arts and Science and the University of Rochester School of Medicine, graduating in 2002 with Alpha Omega Alpha honors. He completed his residency in anesthesiology and his fellowship in interventional pain medicine at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and is board certified in anesthesiology and pain medicine. He earned his MBA from The Johns Hopkins Carey Business School.
