Survey Shows Almost 20% of Women over 65 Diagnosed with Diabetes
March 03, 2026
About 19% of women 65 and older have been diagnosed with diabetes, a national health interview study indicates.
Women with diabetes have a higher risk of getting a yeast infection or urinary tract infection because their bodies may release excess sugar into the urine, which can cause bacteria to grow.
Experts say it’s important to keep blood sugar levels as close to the target range as possible. It’s also advised to drink water and empty the bladder often.
Elizabeth Miller, a certified registered nurse practitioner with Mercy Personal Physicians at Ellicott City, shared signs to watch for.
“Women with a history of gestational diabetes or polycystic ovary syndrome are at a higher risk for diabetes. Symptoms to look out for are blurred vision, increased thirst, increased urination, [and] fatigue,” Miller said.
Women who are pregnant or planning to get pregnant who also have diabetes are advised to work with an OB/GYN to ensure they and their baby stay healthy. Experts say healthy eating and being active can play a big role in good health.
Diabetes can also affect women in menopause. After menopause, a woman’s body makes less estrogen, which can send blood sugar levels up and down. In turn, women may gain weight, which could increase the body’s need for insulin or other diabetes medicines.
