Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Our top focus at Mercy Health Services is keeping our patients, visitors and staff safe. We want to assure you that our teams are actively preparing for the potential spread of COVID-19.

We are working with our providers and facilities across all Mercy Health Services locations and taking the necessary precautions in coordination with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Maryland Department of Health (MDH). We are also coordinating with all other appropriate federal, state and local agencies.

Mercy's Preparedness

Mercy has taken several steps to ensure the safety of our patients, visitors and our staff, including:

  • Elective surgery postponement (detailed below)
  • Visitor restrictions (detailed below)
  • 24-Hour Infection Control Hotline (410-332-4866) for patients and visitors (detailed below)
  • Signs with infection prevention practices are posted throughout the organization
  • Enhanced environmental cleaning to prevent the spread of infections
  • Patients and visitors screened to identify patients who should be tested

As we continue to monitor and plan for COVID-19, we will provide regular communications for our staff, patients, and visitors. We will post updates to this site as well as on MyChart.

Elective Surgery Postponement

On March 16, Governor Hogan issued an Executive Order addressing the management and postponement of elective surgical procedures. The intent of the Executive Order is to allow for increased hospital capacity in preparation for an expected surge in hospital admissions related to COVID-19. Accordingly, Mercy has provided policy guidance to all surgeons and proceduralists postponing elective/non-urgent surgeries/procedures at Mercy Medical Center through Thursday, April 2. Mercy will re-evaluate the policy weekly and provide updates.

If you are a patient with an upcoming surgical procedure at Mercy, your doctor's office will contact you directly with more information. We thank our patients for their understanding as we join with other hospitals across the region to take proactive steps to ensure access to crucial clinical services during this situation.

Visitor Restrictions

To protect the health of our patients, families, and employees, we have implemented a temporary no visitor policy.

These restrictions apply to Mercy's Downtown campus as well as the Mercy Personal Physician sites in Columbia, Glen Burnie, Lutherville, Overlea and Reisterstown.

No visitors will be permitted except by prior approval and under specific circumstances, which may include:

  • End of life care or end of life decision making
  • One parent or caregiver of a child in the neonatal intensive care unit
  • One parent or caregiver of pediatric patients
  • One visitor, which may include the father of the baby, immediate relative or a professional support person or postpartum helper of a patient in the Labor & Delivery and Post-Partum Units
  • One visitor for patients undergoing emergency surgery
  • One visitor to accompany the patient at discharge for necessary teaching/instruction, at the team’s discretion
  • One visitor for family meeting, at the discretion of the Attending Physician

Any visitor who meets the criteria for an exception will be screened for symptoms, international travel and COVID-19 contact history. These visitors may not be permitted to enter if they do not meet the screening standards.

Patients are encouraged to communicate with family, friends, and loved ones by electronic devices such as phone calls and video calls.

Arrival to Mercy - Patients

24-Hour Infection Control & Prevention Hotline

If you have any of the following - fever, cough, shortness of breath (difficulty breathing), have traveled to a COVID-19 affected area, or had contact with a suspected/confirmed COVID-19 patient - please call Mercy’s 24-Hour Infection Control & Prevention Hotline, at 410-332-4866, prior to your arrival.

The hotline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Your call will help us prepare for your arrival and enable us to undertake precautions to ensure your safety as well as the safety of all of our patients and staff. If you do not call ahead and have any of these symptoms, you may be asked to return at a later time. 

When you arrive at Mercy Medical Center or a Mercy Personal Physicians location, you will be asked several questions, which will include recent travel, how you are feeling, and if you have been in contact with anyone who has tested positive for COVID-19. Based on your responses to these questions, we may ask that you wear a mask and/or sit in a private room. These precautions are designed to ensure your safety and the safety of others.  

What You Can Do

While we are being proactive to protect your health and safety, we also encourage you to do the same. We can all play a role in reducing the potential spread of the COVID-19 in our community.

The following are recommendations issued by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC):

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, please use alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid close contact with people who have a cough, fever, or shortness of breath.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are feeling ill.
  • Cough or sneeze into the sleeve of your elbow or use a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash and wash your hands.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using regular household cleaning sprays or wipes.
