Mark Ellerkmann, M.D.

R. Mark Ellerkmann, M.D., FACOG, Director of The Urogynecology Center at Mercy, specializes in the treatment of urinary incontinence in women of all ages. Dr. Ellerkmann also treats pelvic organ prolapse, interstitial cystitis, recurrent urinary tract infections, fecal incontinence, overactive bladder, pelvic floor dysfunction and the special gynecologic needs of aging and handicapped women.

Experienced and Skilled Urogynecologist

The Urogynecology Center is a division of The Gynecology Center at Mercy and part of the renowned Weinberg Center for Women’s Health & Medicine at Mercy Medical Center. This collaboration of medical experts gives women across Maryland the opportunity to be treated by some of the area’s most recognized authorities on gynecologic diagnoses, including the many conditions associated with incontinence.

Dr. Mark Ellerkmann is among a small group of urogynecologists who are Board Certified in both Obstetrics and Gynecology and Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery. As an extensively trained urogynecologist, he has an in-depth knowledge of the latest diagnostic techniques and best treatment options for urinary incontinence and pelvic floor dysfunction.

Urinary Incontinence – Not A Normal Part Of Aging

Dr. Ellerkmann finds most women do not have to suffer the uncomfortable battle of dealing with urinary incontinence or not being able to control when and where they need to urinate. Dr. Ellerkmann is committed to helping women understand urinary incontinence is not a normal part of the aging process. He tells women they should not ignore the signs and symptoms of incontinence, but rather seek answers and medical interventions that will help alleviate the problem.

Urinary Incontinence Can Be Cured

Though urinary incontinence is a condition commonly diagnosed among women after menopause, women ages 30-60 may experience urinary incontinence as well. Dr. Mark Ellerkmann says regardless of a woman’s age she shouldn’t endure the discomfort and embarrassment.

Most importantly, Dr. Ellerkmann emphasizes women should not feel uneasy about going on long trips or disregard their social life for the safety of a nearby bathroom. He finds most women can be treated and cured and that’s great news. For those who may have an extremely severe case, significant improvements can be made so that urinary incontinence doesn’t have to control their lives.

Non-Surgical and Minimally Invasive Surgery Options Available

The range of treatment options Dr. Mark Ellerkmann offers patients include non-invasive techniques and, when necessary, surgery and/or minimally invasive surgery. Some of the best non-invasive treatment options for urinary incontinence include kegel exercises and biofeedback therapy. A variety of medications also are available and may be used to target the patient’s specific needs and diagnosis.

When surgery is the best option for urinary incontinence or pelvic floor dysfunction, Dr. Ellerkmann is a skilled surgeon, in robotic and laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery. Dr. Ellerkmann has a strong interest in minimally invasive treatment options for overactive bladder and urge incontinence not responding to medication as well as minimally invasive treatment options to treat fecal incontinence.

A Noted Urogynecology Expert and Researcher

Named a "Top Doctor" by both Baltimore magazine as well as Castle Connolly Medical, Dr. Ellerkmann has served on the Board of the American Urogynecological Society and has lectured nationally and internationally on urogynecology topics.
