Mercy Vascular Surgeon, Dr. Vincent Noori, Discusses Varicose Veins

Varicose veins can cause tenderness and discomfort. They often appear as dark and prominent lines on the surface of the skin. They're caused by overworked valves in your veins. When the valves that help push oxygenated blood back to your heart are overworked, they can stop functioning properly. Weak valves can lead to a backup of blood, causing your veins to twist and swell.

Vincent J. Noori, M.D., RPVI, vascular surgeon at The Vascular Center at Mercy, says he individualizes treatment for patients.

 “Some people think that they are unsightly. Others can have significant discomfort, pain in the legs, achiness. They can get swelling in their legs and even skin changes called stasis dermatitis or hyperpigmentation. So, for some who have no symptoms, I say you can just leave it alone. For those that are bothered by it, there are a lot of simple measures you can do. For example, leg elevation three to four times a day for 30 minutes at a time,” Dr. Noori said.

Compression stockings can also help and there are minimally invasive procedures which can be done in the office.
