The American College of Radiology (ACR) has recognized Mercy Medical Center’s Tyanna O’Brien Center for Women’s Imaging as a Comprehensive Breast-Imaging Center (CBIC), a designation that recognizes breast-imaging facilities that achieve excellence through participation in the ACR’s rigorous accreditation programs.

The ACR awards the CBIC designation to centers that are fully accredited in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast MRI, and breast ultrasound, including the ultrasound-guided breast biopsy module. The designation recognizes a center’s commitment to quality assurance and improving women’s health through comprehensive breast-imaging services.

The Center for Women’s Imaging at Mercy has radiologists who specialize in the diagnosis, screening, and prevention of breast cancer and breast disease. Services include screening and diagnostic 3D mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MRI, breast biopsies, and imaging-guided localization procedures.

According to the ACR, the CBIC designation provides recognition of a facility’s commitment to quality and includes a comprehensive assessment of the medical imaging facility, an ongoing process for self-assessment, and recognition among patients, providers, payers, and administrators.

“We are extremely proud that the Tyanna O’Brien Center for Women’s Imaging at Mercy has earned this important recognition from the American College of Radiology,” said Deepa Masrani, M.D., director of the Center for Women’s Imaging at Mercy. “This designation reflects the commitment of our entire breast imaging team to providing high-quality imaging and diagnostic services for the women we serve.”

The Tyanna O’Brien Center for Women’s Imaging is part of Mercy’s broader commitment to comprehensive breast care. Mercy introduced advanced Genius™ 3D Mammography™ exams featuring 3DQuorum technology in 2024. The technology provides three-dimensional breast imaging designed to address the effects of overlapping breast tissue that can make abnormalities more difficult to detect on conventional mammography. Additionally, since earlier this year, Mercy has been offering contrast-enhanced digital mammograms, a highly effective diagnostic tool in the early detection of breast cancer.

Facilities that achieve and maintain the ACR’s Comprehensive Breast Imaging Center designation are invited to participate in the ACR National Mammography Database (NMD).

Participation allows centers to benchmark practice performance, compare processes and outcomes with similar practices nationwide, identify opportunities for quality improvement, and receive reports every six months.

The ACR’s CBIC designation remains in effect as long as the center’s required breast imaging services maintain their ACR accreditations.
