What Causes Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is most common among women of reproductive age. It is often a debilitating disease that may begin with symptoms of pain during a woman's periods, during intercourse, with bowel movements or in the lower back. Endometriosis is caused when cells from the lining of a woman's uterus grow in other areas of her body. Most often the growth occurs on the ovaries and the lining of the pelvic area.

Typically your doctor will use laparoscopy to diagnose endometriosis. Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure used to look at the outside of the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries.

The doctors of The Endometriosis Center at Mercy are among an exclusive group of physicians who use a specialized technology called Narrow Band Imaging (NBI) during laparoscopy to detect microscopic and atypical forms of endometriosis. Pioneered at The Endometriosis Center at Mercy, NBI is an optical image enhancement tool that allows our surgeons to see especially difficult forms of endometriosis and, in some cases, detect it at an earlier stage.

Microsurgical techniques combined with the robot's ability to maneuver with a limitless turning radius, elevates the exacting precision that can be performed during endometrial surgery.
