All interns are provided with 11 weeks of elective time. Most subspecialty electives are offered at Mercy Medical Center, with unique electives including IV Therapy, Hospital Administration, Research, and a Reading elective to study for the Step 3 USMLE Exam. Outside electives are also welcome.

Mercy's Emergency Department is one of the busiest in Baltimore. Residents gain experience in acute care evaluations, supervised by University of Maryland emergency room faculty.

Mercy is staffed with full-time, intensivist coverage with twenty-four hour, on-site assistance to residents as needed. Residents are assigned to one month of critical care at the Baltimore VA Medical Center, affiliated with the University of Maryland Medical System, one mile away from the Mercy campus. Additional critical care time may be done at Mercy’s own intensive care unit as an elective.
