The Orthopedic Specialty Hospital at Mercy, led by Dr. Marc Hungerford, Chief of Orthopedics at Mercy, is distinguished by many firsts and ground-breaking advances in orthopedic care. Dr. Hungerford is the first orthopedic surgeon in Maryland to have performed MAKO partial knee resurfacing, a minimally invasive knee procedure powered by RIO Robotic Arm Technology. Mercy’s Orthopedic and Joint Replacement surgeons are among the first in Maryland to offer MAKO total knee replacement and are exceptionally skilled in the anterior approach to hip replacement – a technique that usually has patients up and walking within days of surgery.
Advanced Foot and Ankle Care
Dr. Clifford Jeng leads an impressive team of surgeons in The Institute for Foot and Ankle Reconstruction where they treat every type of ankle problem imaginable. From routine ankle sprains and foot injuries to complex reconstructive surgeries to rebuild an ankle or reattach a foot, Mercy’s foot specialists continue to raise the bar of excellence. Mercy's foot ankle orthopedic surgeons train doctors from around the world on the latest advances in the field.
Life-Changing Treatments for Orthopedic Spine Disorders
Patients who know the excruciating and debilitating pain from back, neck and spine disorders often find the answers they need from Dr. Charles C. Edwards, II, Medical Director, and his colleagues in The Maryland Spine Center at Mercy. Patients from the Baltimore region and from across the nation seek the Spine Center doctors and their expertise in diagnosing and treating spine conditions that may include scoliosis, osteoarthritis, spinal deformity and complex degenerative spine conditions. The orthopedic spine surgeons offer advanced skills in minimally invasive surgery and microscopic techniques for spinal deformity correction.
Expertise Neurosurgical Spine Care
Dr. Charles Park is Director of The Minimally Invasive Brain and Spine Center at Mercy. Dr. Park and his colleagues specialize in minimally invasive procedures for conditions and disorders of the brain and spine as well as peripheral nerve disorders. The team uses state-of-the-art O-arm technologies for real-time, high definition imaging and surgical instrument guidance. These technological advances provide improved precision and accuracy that can typically result in less pain, shorter hospital stays and quicker recovery times.
Healing Upper Extremity Injuries
Mercy's team of upper extremity surgical experts put the orthopedic spotlight on those injuries that touch the everyday movements of the shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand. Our reliance on having full use of our upper extremities, especially use of our hands and shoulders, is something many of us take for granted until that movement, dexterity and nimbleness is compromised. That’s when patients turn to Mercy for expert treatment options. Medical advances come from clinical leadership, which is why The Shoulder, Elbow, Wrist and Hand Center at Mercy is the choice for patients throughout the Maryland region.
Sports Medicine at Mercy
The Mercy team of sports medicine doctors specializes in the prevention and treatment of injuries related to sports and exercise. They treat patients of all ages, caring for athletes ranging from the casual jogger or weekend warrior to competitive and collegiate athletes as well as active and health-conscious seniors.
Sports injuries often affect the knee, shoulder and elbow, and may include complications from ACL tears, meniscus and cartilage injuries to shoulder instability and rotator cuff injuries. Patients often choose Sports Medicine at Mercy because of injuries such as overuse tendonitis, ankle sprains and fractures. Concussions also are a key sports concern managed by the Mercy team.
